Information and Guidance for Patients with Endocrine Disorders and Diabetes
In Saudi Arabia, there are two types of COVID-19 vaccines available: Pfizer and AstraZeneca. The Moderna vaccine has recently been approved, and it is expected that more vaccines will be approved by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority
Diabetes and several endocrine disorders, including adrenal insufficiency and diabetes insipidus, have been classified as health conditions that warrant prompt vaccination
The Saudi Society of Endocrinology & Metabolism has not identified any specific side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine affecting individuals with endocrine disorders or diabetes. Therefore, we recommend getting the COVID-19 vaccine promptly
In general, most vaccines that have been developed have potential side effects
However, those with concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine can refer to the Saudi Ministry of Health's pages or contact the ministry at 937 for answers to any questions they may have
If you have specific questions about your health condition, do not hesitate to consult with your supervising physician
Can COVID-19 vaccines cause severe adverse reactions? Some individuals may experience a reaction or allergy to the vaccine
If you are offered the COVID-19 vaccine and are currently ill, it is advised to reschedule your vaccination until you recover to avoid potential complications
You can learn more about vaccine reactions on the Saudi Ministry of Health’s website
Are individuals with diabetes and adrenal insufficiency at higher risk of severe COVID-19? Yes, many studies have shown that people with diabetes are at a greater risk of severe cases and serious complications from COVID-19
Therefore, the Saudi Society of Endocrinology & Metabolism recommends getting vaccinated as soon as possible, as it helps prevent infection and reduce the severity of the disease if contracted, God willing
Individuals with adrenal insufficiency are not at an increased risk of adverse reactions to vaccines. However, if you experience illness after receiving the vaccine, you should double your hydrocortisone dose as you would during severe illness, based on your doctor's advice
We also advise patients with adrenal insufficiency to monitor their hydrocortisone supply and ensure they have adequate amounts available
The Saudi Society of Endocrinology & Metabolism advises both type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients, as well as those with adrenal insufficiency, to promptly get the COVID-19 vaccine due to their increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19
It is also important to review the latest advice issued by the Ministry of Health periodically by checking the ministry's social media pages. Additionally, you can visit the Ministry of Health’s website for more details on the different types of COVID-19 vaccines and to stay updated with the latest information
